Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw has confirmed that arrests have been made in the tragic shooting incident that occurred at the Salsa on St. Clair festival last month.
Demkiw made the announcement during a press conference addressing the recent U.S. consulate shooting, stating that the individuals responsible for the shooting had been apprehended by the police on Wednesday evening.
While no specific details were provided, Demkiw assured that a detailed press conference would be held on Friday to shed more light on the arrests and investigation progress.
Expressing gratitude to the dedicated homicide team working tirelessly on the case, Demkiw emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation and the need to avoid compromising its integrity.
The shooting at the festival resulted in the deaths of Shaquan Quashie, 25, and Cesar Vernaza, 20, with five others sustaining serious gunshot wounds but ultimately surviving. It was revealed that the incident stemmed from an exchange of gunfire, with the victims known to each other.
Notably, the police recovered two firearms from the scene, highlighting the severity of the situation that unfolded in front of approximately 13,000 festival attendees on July 11 at St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue.
Eyewitnesses recounted the chaos that ensued as gunshots rang out, prompting screams and a frantic rush for safety among the festival-goers.
Following the tragic event, the festival was abruptly canceled, raising uncertainties about its future. The TeleLatino Network (TLN), the festival’s main sponsor, expressed concerns over safety, leading to doubts about the continuation of the beloved Salsa on St. Clair event. Additionally, the local Business Improvement Area (BIA) withdrew its support, citing a decline in backing from residents and businesses.
