A confrontation at Montreal’s Place-des-Arts metro station on Thursday night resulted in several passengers being pepper-sprayed, as reported by the STM transit authority.
The incident unfolded in a train at around 11 p.m. when two men got into a dispute, leading to one of them using pepper spray, according to STM officials.
Following the disturbance, alarmed passengers promptly dialed 911 and pulled the emergency brake, bringing the train to a halt.
Special constables from the STM swiftly arrived on the scene to assist passengers, oversee the evacuation process, and restore regular metro services, with additional support from Montreal police (SPVM), firefighters, and Urgences-santé emergency services.
STM spokesperson Laurence Houde-Roy explained that passengers took quick action by calling for help and activating the emergency brake, effectively stopping the train. She added that STM personnel managed the situation on-site, ensuring passenger safety and a smooth return to normal operations.
The SPVM has launched an investigation into the incident, with the STM confirming their cooperation with the authorities.
At present, details regarding the circumstances of the altercation and the specific number of individuals affected remain undisclosed.
