York Regional Police have announced the arrest of a third suspect in connection with a series of shootings that targeted synagogues in Vaughan and Toronto back in March.
The newly identified suspect, 23-year-old Chris Perreira from Barrie, has been implicated in four separate shooting incidents across York Region and Toronto, including the two synagogue attacks that occurred in quick succession.
The first shooting took place just before midnight on March 6, when gunshots were reported near Clark Avenue West and York Hill Boulevard. Upon investigation, police found that a synagogue had been damaged by gunfire, with two individuals inside at the time, fortunately escaping unharmed.
Shortly after midnight on March 7, Toronto police responded to another shooting incident at a different synagogue near Bathurst Street and Glencairn Avenue. Damage to the front entrance suggested gunshots had been fired, though no one was present during the attack.
These back-to-back attacks aimed at religious establishments set off alarm bells within the Jewish communities of the Greater Toronto Area, prompting a joint investigative effort between York and Toronto police forces.
Previously, two suspects had been charged in relation to the shootings. Following collaboration with Toronto authorities, a third suspect linked to both synagogue attacks was identified.
Chris Perreira had already been facing charges related to a shooting on March 25 in Vaughan and is now additionally charged in connection with a separate shooting on March 19 in Aurora.
With Perreira now in custody, authorities have stated that all suspects involved in the synagogue shootings have been apprehended. He faces a range of criminal charges, including conspiracy to commit an indictable offense, reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and vandalism of religious property, in addition to other firearm-related offenses.
York Regional Police emphasize that the joint investigation into these incidents is ongoing and encourage anyone with relevant information to reach out to their department.
