Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher is scheduled to give an update on a scandal involving a patrol unit at the Montreal-Nord station, located in a diverse neighborhood in the northern part of the city. The scandal, which led to the dismantling of a 16-member patrol unit in June, involved allegations of misconduct and racism within the unit.
The lack of public information about the investigation has prompted concerns and questions from local residents who are seeking transparency and accountability regarding the allegations. The situation has reignited discussions about racism and racial profiling in the community.
Chief Dagher had previously addressed the issue in an internal video message to staff, acknowledging the need for clarity and information. Details obtained through access to information legislation revealed that three officers were suspended, three were assigned to administrative duties, and 10 were transferred to other police units as part of the ongoing investigation.
Although the allegations have been forwarded to Quebec’s prosecutor, no criminal charges have been filed against the officers involved. In preparation for the upcoming public meeting, police have deployed a new team in the community and have initiated meetings with community members to address concerns and foster trust.
