A significant portion of the eastern part of the city has been plunged into darkness following a power outage.
Toronto Hydro reported that over 20,000 customers were impacted by the power outage as of 10:30 p.m. The affected area is bordered by Lawrence to the north, Woodbine Avenue to the east, Cherry Beach to the south, and Jarvis Street to the west.
The outage was attributed to a loss of supply from Hydro One, as stated in a social media update by Toronto Hydro. The utility mentioned that the situation is still developing, and there is no confirmed time for full restoration of power yet.
While repairs are in progress according to Toronto Hydro’s website, most customers may have to wait until early Thursday morning to have their electricity restored.
The power disruption coincided with a series of thunderstorms passing through the Greater Toronto Area on Wednesday night. Environment Canada issued warnings of wind gusts reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour, increasing the risk of tree branches breaking and power lines toppling.
