A West Island barber shop is celebrating 60 decades of serving the community, with generations of customers returning to the same chairs for their haircuts.
Coiffure Pour Hommes, located in Galeries des Sources, will officially mark its 60th anniversary on Oct. 3.
The business opened in 1966, when Giuseppe Lanza and his best friend Antonio Picciotto, who both immigrated to Canada from Sicily, opened the shop.
“We put our heart in this business. We worked very hard from the beginning,” said Lanza.
Picciotto, who is still working at the shop, says he plans to keep going as long as his health allows.
“Until I have the health, I think I’m going to work. I do my client. I still have a few clients from the past, like Donnie,” said Picciotto.
One of those longtime customers is Donnie Cape, who has been coming to the shop since 1969.
“It’s easy. Yeah. It’s very easy to come here. It really is. It’s not like a barber shop. It’s a second house,” said Cape.
Over the years, the shop has welcomed clients who now bring their own children and grandchildren.
Giuseppe’s son, Santino Lanza, now owns the business and says he is proud to continue the family’s legacy.
“My dad and my godfather started a business and I’ve been continuing the business with a great group of guys and good staff and that’s all we could do is keep going every day, hard working and keep the tradition going. It’s family here,” said Santino Lanza, owner of Coiffure Pour Hommes.
The shop’s team includes cousins, barbers and staff who have become part of the family over the years.
For customers, the shop has become more than a place to get a haircut, with laughter, conversations, celebrations and memories shared over the decades.
As the business approaches its 60th anniversary, the family behind Coiffure Pour Hommes says it is grateful to the community that has supported the shop one haircut at a time.
“We love this place. Everybody loves this place,” said Lanza.
“Come to the place where everybody knows your name. No need for an appointment. Come anytime. Ciao for now,” said Bruno Trimarchi, a barber at Coiffure Pour Hommes.
