The Langley School District is implementing new regulations for the use and storage of e-scooters and e-bikes on school premises. Starting this September, a ban on e-scooters and e-bikes will be enforced at all district schools, spanning from elementary to secondary levels.
This decision comes as a precautionary step to ensure the well-being and safety of students, given the rise in e-scooter and e-bike incidents throughout the Lower Mainland, some resulting in severe injuries.
The updated policy permits the use of e-pedal bikes exclusively at secondary schools. Students aged 14 and 15 are allowed to operate light e-bikes, while those aged 16 and above can utilize standard e-bikes. Additionally, adults are permitted to use e-pedal bikes on school grounds.
At the commencement of the school year, students will receive detailed information about these new guidelines. The district emphasizes the importance of parents and guardians engaging in conversations with their children regarding these changes.
Furthermore, the Langley School District will collaborate with various authorities including the Ministry of Education and Child Care, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, ICBC, and the Langley RCMP. Together, they aim to promote safe riding practices and educate students on adhering to safety regulations.
