Montreal is gearing up to host an exciting international cycling event later this month, but residents should be prepared for traffic delays and detours.
The UCI Road World Championships Montreal 2026, taking place from Sept. 19 to 27, will bring together around 1,000 cyclists and attract half a million spectators to the city. The races will wind through various streets in Montreal and the South Shore, impacting seven boroughs and one related municipality: Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Plateau-Mont-Royal, Le Sud-Ouest, Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Outremont, Verdun, Ville-Marie, and Westmount.
To accommodate the event, there will be significant closures on both local streets and highways. Public transit will also be affected, with changes to five STM bus routes and adjustments to RTL services on the South Shore during the race weekend.
For those driving, more than 2,000 free parking spaces will be available at Chevrier with shuttle services to Quartier DIX30 on race days. Residents are advised to plan their journeys in advance, considering alternative transportation methods and staying updated with real-time information provided on the championship’s website and through Quebec 511.
BIXI, the city’s bike-sharing service, will deploy additional bikes in areas with traffic restrictions and offer a valet drop-off service to assist commuters.
