The BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) is sending a clear message to all drivers: safety on the road is non-negotiable, whether you’re commuting or heading out for a leisurely drive.
Recent events on the Sea to Sky Highway near Porteau Cove serve as a stark reminder of the importance of obeying speed limits and traffic laws. Last Sunday at 11 a.m., a BCHP motorcycle officer caught a white Toyota Corolla traveling at 133 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. What made this incident even more concerning was that the Corolla was a taxi, and the passenger in the back seat had just lost their own vehicle due to speeding.
Sgt. Michael McLaughlin of the BCHP emphasized that being a professional driver does not exempt anyone from following the rules of the road.
“Professional drivers are held to a higher standard and must lead by example,” stated McLaughlin.
The 65-year-old taxi driver from Squamish had their vehicle impounded for seven days and received a fine for speeding.
McLaughlin also highlighted the importance of passengers speaking up if they feel unsafe with their driver’s behavior.
“Passengers have the right to demand safe and lawful driving from their taxi or ride-share drivers. Don’t hesitate to address any concerns,” he urged.
Over the Labour Day weekend, BCHP took action against 21 vehicles for exceeding speed limits on the Sea to Sky Highway, underscoring the ongoing need for road safety awareness.
