Authorities in British Columbia are conducting an investigation into an unusual incident that occurred on the evening of August 24 involving a teenage girl and an unidentified individual in a unique costume.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the girl was walking near Shamrock Drive close to the Old Okanagan Highway in West Kelowna when she was allegedly pursued by an individual dressed as the famous “Cat in the Hat” character from the well-known Dr. Seuss book.
Fortunately, the girl was unharmed and managed to safely make her way back home, as confirmed by the police.
Although donning a costume is not inherently illegal, the RCMP emphasizes that behavior such as following someone in a manner that induces fear could potentially be considered criminal harassment.
Cpl. Devon Gerrits of the West Kelowna RCMP stressed the seriousness of the situation, stating, “Regardless of the individual’s intent, instilling fear in a young person by following them is deeply troubling. People need to realize that what may seem like a harmless prank can have severe repercussions if it leads to another person feeling genuinely threatened.”
Authorities are urging anyone with relevant doorbell or dash cam footage from around 9 p.m. in the area to contact the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.
