Authorities in British Columbia are currently investigating an unusual incident that occurred on the evening of August 24, involving a teenage girl and an individual wearing a distinctive costume.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the girl was walking near Shamrock Drive close to the Old Okanagan Highway in West Kelowna when she reported being pursued by an unidentified person dressed as the character from the popular Dr. Seuss book, “Cat in the Hat.”
Fortunately, the girl was unharmed and managed to safely return home, as confirmed by the police.
Although donning a costume is not illegal, the RCMP emphasized that behavior such as following someone in a manner that induces fear could be considered criminal harassment.
Cpl. Devon Gerrits of West Kelowna RCMP expressed concern over the incident, stating, “Regardless of the individual’s intentions, causing a young person to feel threatened is deeply troubling. It is crucial for individuals to recognize that what may be perceived as a harmless prank can have severe repercussions if it instills fear in others.”
Individuals in the vicinity of Shamrock Drive around 9 p.m. who possess pertinent doorbell or dash cam footage are encouraged to contact the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.
