Two decades have passed since James Santos survived the tragic Dawson College shooting, but the memories remain vivid in his mind. As a Montreal police officer today, Santos reflects on how the events of September 13, 2006, not only left him with lasting trauma but also guided him towards the career he now dedicates himself to. Witnessing the bravery of police officers during the attack that day inspired Santos to become the kind of person who helps those in need.
Recalling the day of the shooting, Santos vividly remembers his meeting with Anastasia De Sousa, a friend who tragically lost her life in the cafeteria that fateful morning. As chaos erupted when a gunman entered the college cafeteria, Santos found himself in a harrowing situation, initially believing the firearm was fake until the terrifying reality unfolded before him.
Despite the chaos and danger surrounding him, Santos selflessly tried to aid De Sousa, comforting her in her final moments. As the gunman’s attention turned towards him, Santos found himself facing the possibility of his own demise, yet his focus remained on trying to reason with the assailant to prevent further bloodshed.
The tragic events of that day left Santos grappling with survivor’s guilt and the weight of feeling unable to save his friend. However, Santos chooses to honor De Sousa’s memory by cherishing the joy and laughter she brought into the lives of those around her.
Today, as Santos serves with the SPVM, he hopes to use his own experiences to support others coping with trauma, offering a beacon of hope and resilience to those in need.
