A tragic incident on a highway near Brossard, Montreal’s South Shore in 2022 resulted in the deaths of a mother and son, leading to a guilty plea from the truck driver involved.
The 29-year-old driver, Baljeet Singh, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving that caused the fatal collision, which claimed the lives of Nancy Lefrançois, 42, and her 11-year-old son Loïc. The accident involved a multi-vehicle pileup on Highway 30, with ten others sustaining injuries.
Following a joint recommendation from the Crown prosecutors and defence, Singh faces a potential six-year prison sentence and a 10-year driving ban if the submission is accepted by the judge at the Longueuil courthouse. The decision on sentencing is anticipated by the end of the month.
The collision occurred on the evening of July 22, 2022, when the truck failed to slow down near a construction zone, hitting a total of seven vehicles. Singh was allegedly distracted, possibly by playing an online game on his cellphone at the time.
After fleeing the country and being apprehended in California, Singh returned to Canada and admitted guilt in April. In a somber court session, family members of the victims shared their emotional victim impact statements.
