To ensure the safety and security of the community during the Jewish High Holidays, York Regional Police (YRP) will be increasing patrols and establishing mobile command posts at important locations throughout the region in the upcoming weeks.
In an announcement made on Friday, YRP mentioned that there will be a noticeable increase in uniformed officers near synagogues, Jewish community centers, faith-based institutions, shopping malls, and other popular gathering spots. These officers at the command posts will be accessible to engage with residents, receive reports, and address any safety issues that may arise.
This proactive safety measure comes as the community prepares to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and other significant High Holiday events. YRP emphasized their ongoing collaboration with various safety, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies at different levels of government to monitor and prevent hate-motivated activities. The police force strongly condemned hate, bigotry, and violence within York Region.
The mobile command posts will be operational from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. at different locations on various dates in September and early October:
– JCC Vaughan Jewish Community Centre, 9600 Bathurst St., Maple: Sept. 11, 14, 25, 28; Oct. 1, 4, 6, 9
– Garnet A. Williams Community Centre, 501 Clark Ave. W., Vaughan: Sept. 12, 20, 26, 29; Oct. 5, 7, 10
– Promenade Mall, 1 Promenade Cir., Thornhill: Sept. 13, 21, 27, 30; Oct. 2, 8
These deployments are designed to offer reassurance to residents and discourage hate-motivated incidents, which have been a growing concern in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in recent times.
