Marc Pinizzotto, a beloved Toronto Police officer, would have celebrated his 44th birthday on September 24. Traditionally, his family would gather around an Italian ice cream cake, a simple yet cherished tradition that encapsulated precious family time for his mother, Linda.
However, this year, the absence of the cake serves as a poignant reminder of Marc’s tragic death on June 11 while in the line of duty with the Emergency Task Force, where he had dedicated five years of service. In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, Linda is determined to ensure that her son’s legacy lives on through the establishment of the Marc Pinizzotto Foundation, which aims to support youth through sports, music, and the arts – causes that resonated deeply with Marc and defined his life.
A dedicated husband and father of two, Marc’s passion for hockey, which had been a significant part of his life even before his policing career, will be honored through various tributes. The Red Arena at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville will be named after him, symbolizing his enduring impact on the community.
Additionally, further tributes are planned, including an event at the Living Arts Centre in December and a song by Juno Award-winning Canadian singer Cathy Young dedicated to Marc. Notably, a park in Mississauga’s Lorne Park neighborhood, near Marc’s childhood home, now bears his name, fostering a lasting connection between him and his roots.
Beyond memorials, Linda envisions her son’s legacy as a catalyst for essential conversations about public safety. Central to this mission is the concept of “P3,” a term long associated with the three Pinizzotto brothers in hockey, now repurposed to unite the public, police, and politicians in discussions about necessary changes for enhanced public safety.
