Montreal Gears Up for UCI Road World Championships with Potential Changes to Bus Routes
Montreal is getting ready to host the eight-day UCI Road World Championships, a major event that may impact up to 30 bus routes in the city.
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has been working closely with various partners, including the City of Montreal, police, and event organizers for over three months to plan for the road closures and disruptions that will be necessary for the championship.
According to Alexandre Fernandez, chief bus dispatcher at the STM, the extended duration of the event poses a unique challenge compared to the typical weekend events the transit agency is accustomed to managing. He emphasized the need for flexibility in adjusting operations based on the varying demands of each day during the championships.
Throughout the competition, the STM’s operations centre will be actively monitoring the transit network, ready to address any unexpected issues such as accidents or roadblocks that may arise.
With the UCI Road World Championships spanning eight days, Montreal residents can expect significant road closures in various parts of the city. To stay informed, the STM recommends that transit users regularly check the dedicated event webpage and utilize QR codes placed in affected areas for updates on route changes and service disruptions.
To minimize inconvenience, the agency advises commuters to allocate extra time for their journeys and explore the option of combining bus and metro services where feasible.
