Montreal authorities have reported that a baby was brought to Quebec’s youth protection agency following a distressing incident involving a woman and a one-year-old in close proximity to a homeless settlement.
The Montreal Police Service (SPVM) received an alert at approximately 7 p.m. on Friday regarding the situation near the Notre-Dame encampment.
After witnessing concerning aspects of the scenario, police contacted the Direction de la protection de la jeunesse (DPJ) for further intervention.
Authorities have not disclosed the exact location where the infant was discovered or the connection between the child and the woman involved.
Expressing dismay over the situation, Montreal mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada remarked, “This incident is saddening and intolerable. It defies all logic. If Quebec fails to address this issue, we will take action regarding the vacant area. We cannot delay while children are forced to live in such conditions. I extend my gratitude to the people of Montreal who offered assistance to the child, as well as to our emergency responders and law enforcement officers who swiftly responded.”
No individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
