After a six-year investigation involving multiple police agencies in Alberta, an Alberta man has been charged with arson in connection to a fire at Burnaby Hospital, as confirmed by Burnaby RCMP.
The incident occurred on the evening of Nov. 15, 2020, and was initially responded to by Mounties on Nov. 16. Subsequent investigations led to the conclusion that the fire was a deliberate act of arson, with a person of interest identified through a photo shared by the Burnaby RCMP.
A year later, on Nov. 15, 2021, police provided an update, showcasing a video of the same individual and confirming them as a suspect. Further developments in 2023 revealed that the suspect had relocated to Alberta.
Collaborating with various agencies over the years, including Edmonton Police Service (EPS), Alberta RCMP, and Strathcona County RCMP, Burnaby RCMP investigators diligently pursued the case. Last week, 29-year-old Yu Yun Wang was formally charged with arson and disregard for human life.
Burnaby RCMP Chief Supt. Bill Parmar commended the dedication of the officers involved in the lengthy investigation, emphasizing the impact of the incident on the hospital and community amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Wang is currently in custody in Alberta for unrelated charges.
