Kate and Brian Chong share a remarkable bond that goes beyond being a happy couple: Brian selflessly donated his kidney to save his wife’s life.
As ‘Living Donation Week’ is observed in September, Kate and Brian aim to raise awareness about the life-saving potential of organ donation by recounting their own journey.
In 2011, Kate faced debilitating symptoms such as chronic fatigue, severe headaches, and temporary loss of vision, all stemming from an autoimmune disease called IGA that was attacking her kidneys. The resulting high blood pressure led to kidney damage, necessitating intervention.
After managing her declining kidney function with medication and a health-conscious lifestyle for six years, Brian underwent extensive testing to determine his compatibility as a donor. His unwavering support for Kate was evident from the start, with him expressing readiness to step up for his partner when the need arose.
The confirmation that Brian was a suitable donor in mid-2017 came as a surprise to both of them. Kate marveled at the serendipity of her husband not only being her life partner but also her kidney match.
Though the process was challenging, Brian affirmed that the outcome was immensely rewarding. Dr. Jagbir Gill, the medical director of the Kidney Transplant Program at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, emphasized the critical need for live-organ donations, with hundreds of individuals in British Columbia awaiting kidney transplants at any given time.
Dr. Gill urged people to explore the possibility of donation, highlighting the transformative impact it can have on someone’s life. Brian’s active post-transplant lifestyle serves as a testament to the success of live donations, showing that donors can maintain their quality of life while giving the gift of life to others.
Today, Kate and Brian are celebrating a decade of marriage with their two young children, a dream made possible by the life-saving transplant that brought them closer together. Their story exemplifies the power of love, resilience, and the profound impact of organ donation.
