This victory, with a 3-2 aggregate score, marks Montreal’s first appearance in the final since 2023, ending Vancouver’s streak of four consecutive titles.
“I had a short speech before the game, reminding the team to be ready to give their all,” shared Owusu. “We showed determination and a willingness to push beyond our limits, which ultimately made the difference today. It was about effort, not just skill.”
In a departure from their usual struggles, Montreal displayed efficiency in front of goal, capitalizing on limited opportunities against Vancouver’s dominant play. Interim head coach Philippe Eullaffroy praised the team’s precision but noted room for improvement, urging for even greater effectiveness in finishing chances.
The match, essentially a knockout tie after a drawn first leg, saw Montreal taking the lead through a penalty converted by Owusu. The team extended their advantage just before halftime with another clinical finish from Owusu, showcasing their prowess on the counterattack.
Despite Vancouver’s late effort to stage a comeback, Montreal’s solid defense thwarted their advances, maintaining control until Emmanuel Sabbi’s late consolation goal for Vancouver.
Montreal will now face Forge FC in the Canadian Championship final on Oct. 21 at Stade Saputo. Meanwhile, Vancouver will resume MLS action against Real Salt Lake, while Montreal will host the Columbus Crew, both on Saturday.
