Around 300 blue-collar workers at Montreal’s Parc Jean-Drapeau took a stand on Monday by going on strike.
The decision to strike was made by members of CUPE 301 following a ruling by the Labour Tribunal (TAT) that turned down the City of Montreal’s proposed collective agreement, which included a wage freeze and cuts to the group insurance plan.
Expressing their concerns, Nicolas De Ciccio, the president of CUPE 301, stated in a press release, “We are urging individuals who are not financially well-off to agree to financial decline and, in some cases, to lose their group insurance. Our members have made it clear: this is not something they can accept.”
Last week, the union members overwhelmingly rejected the City’s proposal by a margin of 95.9 per cent.
