Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Stands by Comments on Performance and Fan Support
Facing a challenging season, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the star first baseman of the Toronto Blue Jays, is not backing down from his recent viral remarks made in an interview with Spanish podcaster Veronica Batista.
In the upcoming podcast episode to be released on Oct. 4, Guerrero addressed his struggles in the current season, the first year of his lucrative 14-year, $500-million contract extension with the Blue Jays.
Guerrero expressed, “They didn’t pay me to hit 40 every year. The contract was based on what I did, not necessarily for what I’m going to do. I understand why the fans believe it’s the other way around.” He acknowledged the pressure he feels to perform despite giving his best efforts.
Following a modest performance in a doubleheader on Wednesday, Guerrero’s season statistics stand at .263/.335/.360 with nine home runs in 142 games, a far cry from his stellar post-season performance in the previous year.
Despite facing criticism and boos from fans at times, Guerrero appreciates the unwavering support of his true fans. He clarified his remarks, emphasizing that players are compensated for their past achievements, while he remains committed to striving for excellence for his team.
When questioned about any regrets regarding his interview comments, Guerrero stood firm, stating, “No, I don’t regret myself. I’m not lying with what I said.” He reiterated his dedication to improving and delivering his best performance both mentally and physically for his team.
