The birth rate in Quebec saw a positive turn in 2025, marking an increase from the previous year but still below pre-pandemic levels. According to Statistics Canada, there were 78,200 newborns in Quebec last year, showing a rise of 974 babies compared to 2024.
Moreover, the fertility rate also experienced a slight uptick, climbing from 1.35 children per woman in 2024 to 1.36 children per woman in 2025. Notably, Quebec’s fertility rate surpasses the national average of 1.26 children per woman.
Nationwide, births experienced an uptrend with 373,140 babies born in 2025, up from 366,494 in the previous year. A significant trend highlighted in the report is that women across Quebec and other provinces are delaying motherhood until their thirties. The average age for first-time mothers is 31.5 years in Quebec and 31.9 years across Canada.
