The Durham police have taken legal action against a Whitby resident for allegedly spreading messages of violence and hate towards the Muslim community via social media.
Following an investigation by the Hate Crime Unit, a suspect was apprehended in connection with online posts promoting harm against Muslims under the alias “Sean Strife.” Fortunately, no physical harm was documented.
The accused, identified as Sean Farro, aged 57, faces charges related to inciting hatred and making threats based on prejudice. He is currently in police custody awaiting a bail hearing.
In a recent statement, the Durham Regional Police Service highlighted that this incident falls within the purview of Canada’s Combatting Hate Act (Bill C‑9), which broadens the legal framework to combat hate crimes and protect vulnerable communities from targeted violence and intimidation.
