London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) Makes Medical History with Revolutionary Heart Transplant Technology
London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) recently made medical history by performing a groundbreaking heart transplant using the innovative Transmedics Organ Care system, also known as the “heart in a box.” This marks a significant milestone in Canadian healthcare.
The Transmedics Organ Care system enabled the cardiac team to successfully transplant a donor heart that may not have been viable for transplantation through conventional methods. Dr. Dave Nagpal, co-director of the multi-organ transplant program, highlighted the system’s ability to revive a donor heart that had ceased beating after circulatory death.
By utilizing this advanced technology, the medical team could assess the donor heart’s functionality in real-time, ensuring its suitability for transplantation into the recipient. The recipient of this pioneering procedure was Raj Mittal, who had previously undergone a triple bypass surgery and was rehospitalized in January of this year. Following the transplant surgery in February 2026, Mittal expressed his gratitude for the newfound quality of life the procedure had afforded him.
Thanks to the “heart in a box” technology, Mittal experienced a significantly reduced wait time for his transplant, setting a positive precedent for future organ transplant recipients. This cutting-edge technology is poised to revolutionize the transplantation process by enhancing organ preservation and extending transport times to up to 12 hours, ultimately benefiting individuals on the transplant waitlist.
Dr. Nagpal emphasized the potential impact of this technology on organ availability, with expectations of a substantial increase in donor heart availability by as much as 40%. This groundbreaking procedure was the culmination of years of collaboration between LHSC, Ontario Health, and Trillium Gift of Life Network in London.
