Ontario Students Show Slight Improvement in Math and Literacy Scores
The latest standardized testing results revealed a positive trend in Ontario students’ math and literacy skills. Particularly noteworthy is the improvement in Grade 6 math scores, which have historically struggled to meet the provincial standard, hovering around 50 percent for years. However, the most recent data from the 2025-26 school year shows a slight increase, with 52 percent of Grade 6 students now meeting the standard.
Overall, 65 percent of Grade 3 students and 59 percent of Grade 9 students also demonstrated proficiency in math, indicating progress across multiple grade levels. In terms of literacy, nearly nine out of ten Grade 6 students met the provincial standard in reading and writing, reflecting consistent performance in this area.
While these results are promising, Minister of Education Paul Calandra emphasized the need for continued efforts to support students who are still struggling and address existing achievement gaps. Despite the incremental improvements seen in various grade levels, there is recognition that more work is required to ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed.
The focus remains on prioritizing student achievement, leveraging evidence to pinpoint areas for enhancement, and taking proactive steps to provide comprehensive support for teachers and students alike. By collaborating with school boards, educators, and partners in education, the goal is to strengthen foundational skills, bridge achievement disparities, and equip teachers with the necessary tools for effective classroom instruction.
