Jewish Educators Launch Human Rights Battle Against Ontario School Boards and Unions

A group of twelve Jewish teachers and educators in Ontario have taken a stand against alleged systemic antisemitism and discrimination in their workplaces by filing human rights applications. The applications, submitted to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, target several school boards and teachers’ unions, including the Toronto District School Board, York Region District School Board, and more.

According to a news release, the applicants claim to have faced discrimination based on their ethnicity and assert that the institutions failed to address reported discrimination, and in some instances, retaliated against them for speaking out.

Representing the applicants, Kathryn Marshall emphasized the importance of holding accountable the entities responsible for ensuring a safe work environment for Jewish educators. The applicants seek $150,000 each in general damages for discrimination and compensation for psychological counselling.

The applicants are also pushing for the development of clear and enforceable policies to combat systemic antisemitism, with input from the Jewish community. Michelle Outmezguine, an educator and ETFO member, highlighted the silencing and discipline faced by Jewish educators when voicing concerns.

The applications were filed on October 1, 2026, and the allegations await adjudication by the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.
