A man from Oshawa is in hot water, facing serious accusations from Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) investigators who claim he scammed an elderly woman in Ajax out of over $400,000.
The incident unfolded at a residence near Windsor Avenue and Elm Street in Ajax on Saturday, October 7, 2023, when worries about the woman’s well-being prompted officers to step in.
Upon probing, investigators suspected that the woman was falling prey to financial exploitation, prompting a swift investigation.
Acting on insights shared by the victim, the DRPS Older Adult Support Investigative Services Unit (OASIS) initiated a probe into potential fraud and theft, as detailed in a statement released by DRPS.
After a thorough examination, it was revealed that the victim had incurred financial losses surpassing $400,000.
On September 29, 2026, authorities made an arrest in the case.
The accused, Christos Charalambous of Oshawa, now faces charges for theft over $5,000, fraud over $5,000, and possession of proceeds obtained through crime over $5,000. Despite the charges, he has been let out on an undertaking.
In a bid to uncover any additional potential victims, investigators have made public the suspect’s photo, expressing concerns over other possible incidents of exploitation.
