Montreal Cyclist Miraculously Survives Brush with Danger After Dodging E-Scooter on Bike Path

A 19-year-old Montreal resident is on the road to recovery after a harrowing bicycle accident caused by an e-scooter incident in Montreal’s Hochelaga area.

Shawn John David and his brother were riding along Notre-Dame Street when a speeding e-scooter veered into their path, forcing Shawn to swerve to avoid a collision. Unfortunately, in his attempt to dodge the e-scooter, Shawn crashed into a tree, resulting in severe injuries and a broken bike.

Despite the traumatic experience, Shawn’s brother emerged unscathed. Shawn’s mother, Karine David, expressed her relief that her son survived the accident, recalling the fear she felt upon arriving at the scene to find him unconscious.

The CEO of Vélo Québec, Jean-François Rheault, highlighted longstanding concerns about the safety of the Notre-Dame bike path, labeling it as one of the most hazardous routes in Montreal. He emphasized the need for improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The aftermath of the crash has left Shawn’s family grappling with the challenge of seeking compensation in a situation where a motor vehicle was not involved. Despite exploring various avenues for support, including Quebec’s crime victims’ assistance program, the family has encountered limitations due to the absence of direct contact with the e-scooter rider.

Shawn expressed his frustration at the notion that causing an accident would be necessary to receive assistance, emphasizing the absurdity of such a requirement.

Rheault underscored the importance of collecting accurate collision data to better understand the risks associated with different modes of transportation and to inform safety regulations effectively. He pointed out deficiencies in current data collection practices, particularly regarding e-bikes and incidents not involving motorized vehicles.

Although Shawn is now discharged from the hospital, his family remains concerned about the long-term impacts of the crash, with his mother expressing worry about his physical limitations and the potential strain on their family dynamics.
