In a coordinated effort, law enforcement agencies across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have successfully dismantled a notorious street gang whose criminal reach extended far beyond the region.
Dubbed as “Operation 44”, the intensive nine-month probe by Durham Region police, launched in April 2025, targeted a gang known as “44” involved in drug trafficking and illegal firearms trade. Shockingly, members of the gang openly flaunted their illegal profits on social media platforms.
The crackdown led to the execution of sixty-one search warrants in various locations, including Durham Region, Toronto, Lindsay, York Region, Peel Region, and even reaching as far as Winnipeg.
A total of thirty-four individuals, aged between 18 and 53, now face a staggering 139 charges. The authorities managed to seize a substantial cache of drugs exceeding $2.7 million in street value, along with the recovery of 10 firearms, with four of them being traced back to Detroit, where they were reported stolen.
Durham Police Chief Peter Moreira expressed concern about the prevalence of repeat offenders among the arrested suspects. Moreira highlighted that nearly half of those apprehended were already under court-ordered release but continued to engage in criminal activities, emphasizing a systemic failure that needs urgent attention.
