“Ontario Liberals Amplify Call for Urgent Inquiry, Demand ‘Rapid Response’ Team for Eglinton Crosstown LRT Post-Launch”

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT project, which has been in construction for over 14 years, is showing signs of nearing completion. The Ontario Liberal Party has joined the growing calls for a public inquiry into the troubled line, criticizing Premier Doug Ford’s handling of the project. Don Valley East MPP Adil Shamji and Scarborough-Guildwood MPP Andrea Hazell expressed concerns about the impact on communities along Eglinton, citing congestion, business closures, and job losses.

Shamji and Hazell urged the government to take proactive steps to ensure a smooth opening of the 19-kilometre, 25-station line, highlighting the need for competence over chaos. Despite the government’s declaration of substantial completion in December, concerns remain about the readiness of the line for public use. Calls for a public inquiry have also come from the Ontario NDP, Toronto city council members, and local business owners.

Construction of the Eglinton Crosstown began in 2011 under the previous Liberal government but has faced delays and challenges over the years. Similar to Line 6 Finch West, the infrastructure is owned by Metrolinx, with the TTC set to operate the trains. Transparency and accountability have been called into question, with demands for a thorough investigation into the project’s history and management.
