Vehicle hits 2 pedestrians in Burnaby; both taken to hospital

Two pedestrians have been taken to the hospital after being hit by a vehicle in Burnaby on Saturday afternoon.

Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj tells 1130 NewsRadio the collision took place on Hastings Street just east of Delta Avenue shortly before 1 p.m.

“The driver of the vehicle did stay on scene,” Kalanj said.

The pedestrians’ condition isn’t clear, he says.

As well, he says it is difficult to say whether or not speed or alcohol is considered a factor.

“We’re going to consider every angle. We don’t know what the contributing factors are for sure,” he said.

“I do know in that area, it’s quite a windy part of Hastings. I wouldn’t say there are a lot of collisions there, but there is not a lot of visibility. But as far as the cause of the collision, we’ll know a whole lot more in the coming hours.”

Police closed Hastings both east and west between Delta and Springer after the crash.

“We’re letting everyone know you can expect the police to be there for several hours into the evening as the investigation continues,” Kalanj said.

“Our criminal collision investigation team is on scene now and has taken conduct of the investigation.”

He says drivers who need to go through the area should find an alternate route. Hastings is expected to be closed for several hours into the evening.

The Burnaby RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team has taken over the investigation.
