Impaired ‘L’ driver has Ferrari impounded in West Vancouver

A Ferrari has been impounded after the driver, a 20-year-old woman with an “L” licence, was found to be impaired, according to the West Vancouver Police Department.

Shortly before 2 a.m. on May 18, an officer noticed the black Ferrari Portofino producing excessive exhaust noise while driving along Marine Drive.

Police stopped the vehicle, which is when they discovered the driver had a Class 7 Learner’s Licence and wasn’t displaying an “L” sign.

They then conducted a breathalyzer test, and the woman blew two “fail” readings.

“She received a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, a 30-day vehicle impound, and violation tickets for driving contrary to her licence restrictions and failing to display her ‘L’ sign,” the West Van PD said.

The passenger got in the driver’s seat to take over, but police say they didn’t get very far.

“The 49-year-old male drove approximately 10 feet before officers intervened,” police said.

“He provided two ‘warn’ readings and was issued a 3-day immediate roadside prohibition.”

The West Vancouver Police Department has a reminder for drivers with learner’s licences.

“West Van Police remind drivers holding a Class 7 Learners Licence that they must not have consumed any alcohol or drugs, they must display the ‘L’ sign, they are not permitted to drive between midnight and 5 a.m., they are only permitted one passenger, and they must have a qualified driving supervisor 25 years of age or older, with a valid licence, who is not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

As well, drivers are reminded that provincial noise regulations require vehicles to produce no more than 83 decibels of sound.
