On the eve of the National Assembly’s adjournment, the CAQ government has abandoned its efforts to pass its controversial Quebec constitution bill.
Faced with opposition from Québec Liberal Party and Québec Solidaire in the parliamentary committee, Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette announced Thursday that he was abandoning his ambitious, wide-ranging bill.
As for why the government did not impose a gag order to fast-track the legislation, the minister said the decision rested with House Leader François Bonnardel and Premier Christine Fréchette.
The parliamentary committee that was scheduled to meet on Thursday to review the many articles of the constitution still awaiting adoption would therefore not continue its work.
