A 15-year-old youth was injured in a collision between a commercial panel van and the youth on an e-scooter.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of Metral Drive and Bergen-Op-Zoom Drive.
A van travelling northbound on Metral Drive was turning right onto Bergen-Op-Zoom Drive when it collided with a 15-year-old male youth who was travelling southbound on the adjacent multi-use pathway.
The youth fell on the ground following the collision and was treated on scene by first responders from BCEHS for his non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
From the investigation and talking to both the driver and the youth, violation tickets were issued to both.
The driver of the van was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield to the e-scooter rider.
The youth was issued a ticket under the Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project Regulations for failing to wear a helmet and operating an e-scooter while under the minimum age.
“This collision highlights the shared responsibility that exists between drivers and those using alternative modes of transportation,” said Cst. Gary O’Brien, Media Relations Officer, Nanaimo RCMP.
