Montreal gas prices remain high despite drop in oil prices

Motorists are not yet seeing relief at the pumps, even as global oil prices have fallen back to near pre-conflict levels following easing tensions in the Middle East.

According to Quebec’s Régie de l’énergie, the average price of regular gasoline in the Montreal area remains 24 cents per litre higher than it was before the U.S. strikes in Iran. The current average price is 175.5 cents per litre, despite a temporary suspension of the federal excise tax on gasoline.

On Friday, regular gasoline prices had fallen across the region, including 172.9¢ cents per litre at an Esso on Saint-Laurent Blvd. in Montreal, 172.9¢ cents at a Petro-Canada on Curé-Labelle Blvd. in Laval, and 172.9¢ cents at an Ultramar on Jacques-Cartier Blvd. East in Longueuil.

Industry observers say pump prices may take longer to decline, as oil markets stabilize and countries work to replenish strategic crude reserves.

Air travellers are also seeing little relief. While the cost of aviation fuel has dropped from recent highs, it remains above pre-conflict levels. WestJet and Porter Airlines have reduced some fuel surcharges on reward bookings, but most airline surcharges remain in place.
