Hockey Icon Hayley Wickenheiser Ends Remarkable 8-Year Run with Maple Leafs

Hockey legend Hayley Wickenheiser is bidding farewell to the Toronto Maple Leafs after spending eight seasons working with the NHL team’s front office. In an Instagram post shared on Thursday, Wickenheiser revealed that the decision to part ways followed discussions with the new Maple Leafs general manager, John Chayka. Despite her anticipation of continuing in a significant role within the organization, the leadership had a different vision.

Wickenheiser initially joined the Maple Leafs in August 2018 as the assistant director of player development, transitioning to the role of assistant general manager in July 2022. A decorated player, she led Canada to four Olympic gold medals and seven world championships during her illustrious career, holding the record for most career points in Canada with 168 goals and 211 assists in 276 games.

Wickenheiser is among the few front-office members who were released from their positions this week. General manager Chayka expressed gratitude for the contributions of those affected, emphasizing that the decisions were made in the context of organizational evaluation and wishing them the best in their future endeavors.
