A group of media organizations has taken legal action in British Columbia to acquire details about the firearms involved in the tragic Tumbler Ridge mass shooting, as well as the guns confiscated from the assailant’s residence.
The consortium, which counts The Canadian Press among its members, appeared in provincial court in Vancouver on Friday to request access to the “information to obtain” documents submitted by the police for search warrants.
The court session ended without a set date for the next hearing.
In February, an attack by 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar resulted in the deaths of eight individuals in the secluded northeastern community of Tumbler Ridge, including her mother and brother at their home. Van Rootselaar later went on to fatally shoot five children and an educational aide at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School before taking her own life.
Recently, the British Columbia government disclosed its intention to take legal steps against artificial intelligence company OpenAI in connection to the incident, having engaged legal representation in both Canada and California.
It was revealed that the perpetrator had concerning exchanges with OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot prior to the tragedy, with the company flagging these exchanges but not reporting them to the authorities.
