Hamilton police utilized a common fast-food receipt found inside a stolen vehicle to apprehend a 16-year-old boy involved in a theft case earlier this week. The incident unfolded when officers responded to reports of a black Ford Explorer blocking traffic on Hwy. 8 and King Street East at 7:50 a.m. on Monday, July 21. Upon arrival, they discovered the SUV, reported stolen in Halton Region, unoccupied with hazard lights flashing.
During their investigation, officers stumbled upon a fast-food receipt inside the vehicle. Although seemingly ordinary, the timestamp on the receipt emerged as a crucial clue. Following this lead, the police visited the restaurant, reviewed CCTV footage from the transaction time, and identified a male youth known to them. Subsequently, they proceeded to the teenager’s home and made the arrest.
The 16-year-old suspect faces charges of possessing property obtained through crime exceeding $5,000 and failing to comply with a youth sentence order. Due to legal restrictions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), the identity of the individual has not been disclosed.
Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist with the case.
