Amid the ongoing wildfires in British Columbia, the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) emphasizes the importance of heeding evacuation orders for safety.
During a recent public information meeting in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, BCWS shared a compelling rescue operation incident involving a man who initially refused to evacuate due to the Pear Lake wildfire evacuation order.
Bryce Moreira, the Incident Commander, recounted the encounter with the man who chose to stay despite the approaching fire. Despite warnings from the crews about the dangerous situation, the man was reluctant to leave, responding in a disagreeable manner.
After the crews left, they were urgently called back as the man’s property became surrounded by fire, leaving him stranded. Fortunately, the prompt response from the crews ensured the safe rescue of the man.
Moreira stressed the critical importance of following evacuation orders and alerts for the safety of the public and first responders. He highlighted how diverting resources to rescue those who disregard orders hinders the crews’ ability to respond effectively in other areas for fire suppression and protection of structures and values.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in not evacuating when instructed to do so during wildfires.
Currently, the BCWS reports 129 active blazes across the province, underscoring the ongoing challenges posed by the wildfires.
