McGill University Faces Class-Action Lawsuit Over Alleged Antisemitism Among Jewish Students
A Quebec Superior Court judge has approved a class-action lawsuit filed by Jewish students at McGill University who claim the institution did not adequately address antisemitism on campus.
The lawsuit contends that Jewish students experienced antisemitic and anti-Zionist incidents, including harassment and assault during protests following the Israel-Palestine conflict in October 2023.
The students are seeking $5 million in punitive damages and a partial tuition fee reimbursement, asserting that the university failed in its duty to protect them from discrimination.
Justice Dominique Poulin has greenlit the case to proceed, clarifying that granting class-action status does not imply a decision on the case’s merit.
B’nai Brith, a Jewish advocacy group, commended the ruling as a crucial initial step in acknowledging the challenges faced by Jewish students and demanding accountability and change.
In response, McGill University stated its condemnation of all forms of antisemitism and anti-Jewish sentiments, reaffirming its commitment to preventing and addressing discrimination.
