A firearms investigation that began in Toronto unfolded tragically in Mississauga, resulting in a 19-year-old individual being fatally shot by police. Following the incident, three individuals, including a 17-year-old girl, are now facing numerous firearm-related charges.
The events transpired when Toronto police responded to a gun report near The Esplanade and Lower Jarvis Street. Subsequently, a suspect and a Mercedes linked to the case were identified, leading plainclothes officers to track the vehicle as it traveled from Toronto to Mississauga.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw clarified that the Mississauga investigation was unrelated to the recent U.S. Consulate shooting suspects. Allegedly, when officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver tried to escape, ultimately hitting a plainclothes officer. In the ensuing confrontation, a police officer discharged their weapon, resulting in the death of the 19-year-old individual.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Confirming that the deceased was shot by police and died at the scene, the SIU also noted minor injuries sustained by the officer.
Further developments in the firearms investigation led to the arrest of three individuals linked to the initial gun call. Naquon Laidley, 23, of Toronto, Kahiem Bailey-Whitfield, 19, of Mississauga, and a 17-year-old female are facing firearm-related charges.
Due to legal restrictions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), the identity of the 17-year-old remains protected.
The SIU’s inquiry into the series of events during the attempted vehicle stop in Mississauga, including the fatal shooting and the injury to the officer, remains ongoing.
