Quebec construction industry urges political parties to prioritize housing ahead of elections. The Association of Construction and Housing Professionals of Quebec (APCHQ) has put forth a set of recommendations to address housing supply and affordability issues in the province. They emphasize the importance of accessible and quality housing for Quebec residents.
APCHQ proposes the establishment of a dedicated “super ministry” for housing to streamline coordination among government agencies, municipalities, and private organizations. The organization, representing over 28,000 housing businesses in Quebec, stresses the need to optimize construction processes, support housing renovation, and promote sustainable and affordable housing options.
To boost housing initiatives, APCHQ suggests increasing financial support and loans to municipalities through the Quebec Infrastructure Plan, incentivizing rental housing by reimbursing sales tax, and providing assistance for renovating vacant properties. They also advocate for water conservation measures, equitable distribution of development costs, and promoting local and Canadian suppliers, as well as innovative housing solutions like prefabricated and energy-efficient buildings.
