Tragedy struck on a peaceful evening in Georgian Bay Township as a 31-year-old resident of Mississauga lost their life when their canoe tipped over on Stewart Lake. The incident occurred just after 8 p.m., a mere 40 feet from the safety of the shoreline.
Reports from the Ontario Provincial Police revealed that two individuals were in the canoe at the time of the accident. While one person was rescued promptly by a passing boater, the other sadly vanished beneath the water’s surface and could not be located.
Following an extensive search effort, the missing individual was discovered by the diligent members of the OPP underwater search and recovery unit the next day.
The authorities, in collaboration with the Ontario coroner’s office and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
In a cautionary message to all water enthusiasts, the OPP emphasized the critical importance of water safety. They advised boaters and paddlers to prioritize their safety by wearing proper lifejackets, checking weather conditions before setting out, and ensuring all necessary safety equipment is on hand.
