A critical incident unfolded in Calgary on Monday morning when a police officer was shot during a routine traffic stop, leading to a dramatic chase through a popular city park. The suspect, after a series of dangerous actions, was later discovered dead.
According to Calgary police, the situation began with a vehicle stop in the southwest neighborhood of Spruce Cliff at approximately 11:45 a.m. The encounter took a violent turn when a man within the vehicle opened fire, injuring an officer. The suspect then fled into nearby Edworthy Park, firing shots at officers and bystanders as he escaped.
In a frantic sequence of events, the suspect reportedly commandeered another vehicle within the park, drove briefly before getting stuck, and ultimately fled on foot. The HAWCS helicopter played a crucial role in tracking the suspect’s movements, leading to the discovery of his deceased body in the Bow River.
The injured officer has been hospitalized and is in a stable condition, with no other reported injuries from the incident. Following a “dangerous person alert,” authorities conducted a thorough search before confirming the end of the threat, with emergency teams visible near Shouldice Park along the Bow River.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has assumed control of the investigation, as is protocol for cases involving serious harm or fatality in police-related interactions.
