Prime Minister Mark Carney says the federal government will pour more than $11 billion into Quebec’s shipbuilding industry to build six new icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard.
In prepared remarks, Carney calls it the largest shipbuilding contract in the province’s history.
The new icebreakers will replace the Coast Guard’s aging heavy and medium icebreakers.
Carney made the announcement alongside Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette at the Chantier Davie shipyard in Lévis.
Carney says the first steel for the ships will be cut next fall and the first ship delivered in five years.
The announcement comes just days after trade talks with the United States collapsed, and as President Donald Trump issues new tariffs threats against Canadian industry.
