Children and young people now have a new advocate looking out for them. Marie-Eve Brunet Kitchen, the newly appointed Children’s Welfare and Rights Commissioner, officially kicked off the institution’s activities in Montreal on Thursday. Three investigations have already been launched.
The establishment of this role follows the tragic death of a young girl known as the Granby girl, prompting the creation of the position after the Laurent Commission. The commissioner’s office will be a safe space for both children and adults to report injustices or violations of rights.
It’s important to note that the commissioner is distinct from the Director of Youth Protection (DPJ). While the DPJ handles legal procedures, the commissioner’s primary role is to receive reports and provide support to children in need.
The ongoing investigations will focus on evaluating the availability of care for children throughout Quebec, the resources for accommodations for autistic or intellectually disabled children and young individuals under 25, and the prevention of similar tragedies like that of the Granby girl. This critical assessment aims to address potential communication gaps among relevant agencies involved in child welfare.
