BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) has shared a video capturing a young man evading police on an e-motorcycle in North Vancouver, urging his parents to step forward.
The incident took place on Aug. 28 at approximately 6 p.m. when a BCHP officer attempted to halt an e-motorcycle operator, described by police as having limited riding abilities, on Grand Boulevard.
Rather than complying, the rider accelerated through a stop sign in a bid to escape law enforcement. The motorcycle narrowly missed colliding with a car before fleeing the scene, prompting the officer to opt against pursuit for safety concerns.
The video, in adherence to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, obscures the youth’s face. Described as aged between 14 to 18 with a slender frame, he sports a distinctive receding chin and was attired in a bicycle helmet with a visor, a black hoodie, cuffed jeans, and black Adidas sneakers, as per highway patrol reports.
Authorities have noted a surge in young riders attempting to provoke police into pursuits, a reckless behavior denounced by Sgt. Michael McLaughlin as “stupid.” Emphasizing the importance of parental cooperation in preventing harm, BCHP stresses the need for guardians to ensure their children’s safety.
Sgt. Michael McLaughlin highlighted concerns over the use of electric motorcycles ill-suited for public roads, lacking essential features like pedals and signal lights, which pose risks to both riders and others on the road.
Parents are called upon to play their part in guaranteeing their children’s responsible and lawful riding habits, as opposed to engaging in dangerous behaviors.
