A man from Calgary has been arrested for allegedly making death threats against Prime Minister Mark Carney, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
The RCMP was informed on July 28 about threatening messages posted on a YouTube account. Following an investigation by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) within the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region, 31-year-old Jamie Dacosta was apprehended and charged with uttering a threat to cause harm to Prime Minister Carney, as outlined in Section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.
The mandate of the RCMP Federal Policing includes investigating a wide range of criminal activities, including those related to security concerns for prominent figures such as the Prime Minister, as well as issues like terrorism, cyber attacks, and espionage.
In a statement released to the press, the RCMP emphasized the importance of maintaining heightened awareness in the ever-evolving security landscape both domestically and internationally, especially for public figures.
Dacosta is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Calgary on September 15.
