Prosecutors have decided to drop charges against a jeweller, Ali Raza, who was accused of knowingly receiving a large amount of stolen gold in a major heist at Toronto’s Pearson airport. The Crown attorney stated in a recent court hearing that they found no reasonable prospect of conviction, leading to the decision to halt the proceedings against Raza. Raza, along with others, was charged over two years ago in connection to what authorities have labeled as Canada’s largest gold heist.
Raza’s lawyer has emphasized that the jeweller has consistently maintained his innocence throughout the legal process. This development follows the Crown withdrawing charges against another individual, Amit Jalota, involved in the same case. Jalota’s lawyer expressed that her client has faced challenges over the past three years and that the case has had a detrimental impact on him and his family, leading to denial of service by financial institutions.
Earlier, a man involved in the heist, Arsalan Chaudhary, was sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to repay $22 million in restitution after admitting guilt to theft over $5,000. Chaudhary was apprehended upon returning from Dubai. Authorities have disclosed that the heist occurred following the arrival of a flight from Zurich, Switzerland, containing 400 kilograms of gold and $2.5 million in foreign currency, which later went missing from a different area of Pearson airport.
As a jury trial approaches for the remaining accused, the situation continues to unfold.
